Natty Dread Congo Bongo What does it mean?

Natty Dread Congo Bongo What does it mean?

“Natty Dread Congo Bongo,” the term goes way back.  What is a the true meaning of Natty Dread Congo Bongo?  Well, Natty Dread is a Rastafarian term for a member of the Rastafarian community. The image of such a person is often used in reggae music and elsewhere to represent an idealized personification of the Rastafarian movement as a whole. It combines the term natty (as in “natural”) and a style of dreadlocks which have formed naturally without cutting, combing or brushing.

People from every walk of life, be it in the music world or sports field, have opted to wear dreadlocks (matted coils of hair). As a result, dreadlocks have become increasingly socially acceptable. Even those with very straight hair have developed methods to dread lock their hair.  The Rasta Woman is serious about her religion, family and culture.  You can read more about Life of Rasta Women, the 20 rules and principles for living as a Rastafarian Empress.

Several different cultures have commonly worn locs. In some cultures, locs are an expression of religious beliefs. In other cultures, dreadlocks are a representation of ethnic pride or simply fashionable.

Loc jewelry can be worn on all types of locs, from Sister locks to Freeform locs, however the maturity of your locs makes a difference when choosing the right loc jewelry.  Only place loc jewelry onto your hair if it is healthy and strong.

Rasta style gained in popularity, beauty and fashion industries jumped on the bandwagon. These industries were hoping to capitalize financially.

Salons now offer their dreadlock clients a variety of hair care products for their locs.  These products range from shampoo, wax, and jewelry.

The hair stylists, working at these salons, started creating a variety of different modified or artificial locs, including extensions, multi-colored synthetic locs.

4 Ways To Maintain Your Braids

4 Ways To Maintain Your Braids

Many clients who have Braids and twist are wondering how they can maintain their braids and twists.  Even though braids and twists are considered to be a protective style, your natural hair should remain strong and healthy throughout the process.  As a Cosmetologist, I have always promoted the need to have healthy hair.
As you may know there are things that you can and should do to take care of your hair, especially when you’ve chosen to wear braids or twists. The following tips will ensure that your braids look good, last long, and your natural hair continues to thrive.

  • Moisturize Your Scalp:  Hair needs moisturize to stay healthy.  Think of your hair as a plant. Without hydrated soil, the plant can not thrive and the same goes for your scalp and hair. So make sure that you moisturize your scalp at least once a day with a little water.
  • Protect Your Hair When Going To Bed: Covering your hair  with a satin scarf, bonnet, or even sleeping on a satin pillowcase helps keep your edges in tact and your hair from drying out. Cotton soaks up moisture, therefore a cotton pillow case extracts the moisture from your hair and scalp.
  • Wash Your Braids: Some may think that you aren’t able to wash your own hair when you have it styled with braids. This is false. There is buildup that can form on your scalp from everyday dirt, sweat, etc. that has to be cleansed.  Shampooing your braids aren’t that difficult.  It can be done in the shower by using cleansing products.  I highly recommend Dr. Bronner’s pure-castile liquid peppermint soap.  It will throughly cleanse your scalp while leaving you with a fresh minty feeling every time the wind blows!
  • Moisturize & Seal Your Hair: Moisturizing your hair is another key to maintaining the integrity of your hair, with or without braids. We recommend starting out with a moisturizer of your choice, whether it be homemade, store bought, or just regular water. Then be sure to seal that hydration in will some type of oil or or sealing product. This will ensure that your hair remains soft and supple instead of dry and brittle.
  • Don’t Leave Your Braids In Too Long: Braids and twists are considered to be a type of protective style, but if left in too long, they can become quite damaging. These styles are meant to be temporary.  I recommend the you keep the style for up to four to eight weeks, depending on the style.

Why White Girls love Wearing Dreadlocks

Why White Girls love Wearing Dreadlocks

White girls love to wear dreadlocks.  Some of these women who wear dreads are hippies, punk or just regular everyday people who want to express themselves through their hairstyle.  You may ask why would someone who had long, straight or curly soft hair want their hair to get matted into dreadlocks?  Well, I can’t answer for the white ladies because I am an African-American, however, my humble opinion on white girls wearing dreadlocks are neutral.  I say this because people wear their hair in many different styles for many different reasons.  It’s not just a Black thing or a Caribbean thing or a Jamaican thing or even Rastafarian thing.   It goes a lot deeper than most people know.  Some people wear their hair locked for religious reason, while others look at dreadlocks as simply a fashion statement.

Regardless of your reason for wearing dreadlocks, here is a brief history of the hairsyles origin:

Dreadlocks have been worn by nearly every culture at some point in time or another. Roman accounts stated that the Celts wore their hair ‘like snakes’. The Germanic tribes and Vikings were also known to wear their hair in dreadlocks. Dreadlocks have been worn by the monks of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, the Nazarite of Judaism, Qalandri’s Sufi’s, the Sadhu’s of Hinduism, and the Dervishes of Islam, and many more! There are even strong suggestions that many early Christians wore dreadlocks; most notably Sampson who was said to have seven locks of hair which gave him his inhuman strength!

Now that you understand where dreadlocks may have originated,  you may want to take a look at the photos below to get some dread inspiration and learn how to make your dreadlocks uniquely YOU!

Hair Wrapping vs Hair Extensions

Hair Wrapping vs Hair Extensions

Hair Wrapping verses Hair Extensions have become a very popular subject amongst Hair Braiders lately. I gotten so many questions and comments on the subject, therefore, I decided to write about the differences between hair wrapping and hair extensions.

In the State of Florida, it is mandatory for Hair Braiders to take a 16 Hour Hair Braiding Course. This course is needed for Braiders who want to work in a salon or open their own business.

According to the Department of Business and Professional Regulations “Hair braiding” means the weaving or interweaving of natural human hair for compensation without cutting, coloring, permanent waving, relaxing, removing, or chemical treatment and does not include the use of hair extensions or wefts.”

This is an example of “Hair Wrapping”

Hair Wrappers also need to be certified in the state of Florida by taking a 6 hour course. The definition of a Hair Wrapper according to The Department of Business and Professional regulations is:

“Hair wrapping” means the wrapping of manufactured materials around a strand or strands of human hair, for compensation, without cutting, coloring, permanent waving, relaxing, removing, weaving, chemically treating, braiding,
using hair extensions, or performing any other service defined as cosmetology.

braids

Many people have their own interpretation of the term ” hair wrapping”.   To clarify, I looked up the question and found the answer, “Can a Hair Braider or Hair Wrapper add extensions inth the hair?  The answer is NO.   Visit the Florida Department of Business & professional regulations website, click here to read the question and answer.  I also call the DPBR for verbal clarification, which I received.  To verify,  you can speak to a customer service representative from the DPBR at this 850-487-1395  from 8:30am to 5:00pm.  They will be happy to answer any questions you may have concerning Hair Braiding.

Please do not take the Hair Wrapping course thinking that you can use it together with your Braiding License to add hair extensions into your clients hair.  I am not saying this to scare you or make you uneasy.  I want you to be aware of the consequences.  If you are adding hair into your braided hairstyle and the State Board Inspector walks into your salon, sees you adding hair with a Braiders license, you can be fined! People take chances on a daily basis apply hair extensions, however, it is not approved by the Cosmetology Board, for Hair Braiders to add extension hair even with a Hair Wrappers license.

If you would like to pursue a career in Cosmetology, and receive a license, you will be allowed to add hair extensions into braided hair.  Here is the definition of Cosmetology:

“Cosmetology” means the mechanical or chemical treatment of the head, face, and scalp for aesthetic rather than medical purposes, including, but not limited to, hair shampooing, hair cutting, hair arranging, hair coloring, permanent waving, and hair relaxing for compensation. This term also includes performing hair removal, including wax treatments, manicures, pedicures, and skin care services.
